Injury Updates: Starling Marte Returns to Action
The Mets look to have multiple bullpen arms close to returning to the big leagues, and Starling Marte played in his first rehab game on Wednesday. They will all be a welcome boost to a team that has struggled a bit recently.
Let’s take a look at how the rehab assignments are going for four players:
Starling Marte
Marte began his rehab assignment on Wednesday afternoon with the Low-A St. Lucie Mets. He was their DH, batting second. Marte singled to right field in his first at-bat of the game and then immediately stole second base. Marte struck out in his final two at-bats of the game.
The veteran outfielder has been on the injured list since late June with a bone bruise on his right knee. When on the field in 2024, Marte has bounced back from an awful 2023 season with a 113 OPS+ and 12-for-12 in stolen bases.
Reed Garrett
On Tuesday, the right-handed reliever struck out three in his inning for Triple-A Syracuse. He allowed one hit and walked one, and his fastball was up to 98 mph. It was Garrett’s second rehab outing; he allowed three runs and only recorded one out in his first one on Sunday for Double-A Binghamton.
Garrett was placed on the IL in early July with elbow inflammation. Before the injury, Garrett had a 3.64 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 42 innings for the Mets.
Sean Reid-Foley
Another right-handed reliever who would be a great addition to the Mets bullpen for the stretch run. SRF pitched on Thursday for Triple-A Syracuse in his fifth overall rehab appearance. He struck out Red Sox rehabbing first baseman Triston Casas with the bases loaded to escape a jam on Thursday. SRF allowed two hits and walked a batter in the outing. He has issued seven walks and struck out six over 3 1/3 rehab innings.
SRF was placed on the IL in June with a right shoulder impingement. He had a 1.66 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 21 2/3 innings for the Mets this year.
Grant Hartwig
The right-handed reliever has been on the IL since June after needing surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. Hartwig has pitched in three games between St. Lucie and Binghamton, allowing one run in 2 2/3 innings. Hartwig was pitching well (2.31 ERA) for Triple-A Syracuse when he was placed on the IL. He had a 6.75 ERA in four big league appearances this season and is on the Mets’ 40-man roster.
