FACT FOCUS: False claims follow Minnesota governor's selection as Harris' running mate
The announcement that Vice President Kamala Harris had selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate in the 2024 election led to false claims on social media. Among them were posts suggesting that Walz said on CNN that he wanted to invest in a “ladder factory” to help people scale the wall on the U.S. Mexico border. The posts misrepresent a comment he made in jest on “Anderson Cooper 360” where he criticized former President Donald Trump's plan to build a wall on the southern border. The selection also led to false claims that Walz had Minnesota's flag redesigned to resemble the Somali flag. It was redesigned to address an old design that was offensive to Native Americans and others.
