Woman drops 30ft to beach below after falling through trapdoor on Blackpool pier

A woman is in hospital after falling through a hole on the famous Central Pier in Blackpool.

Witnesses said the woman, believed to be in her 50s, landed with a ‘thud’, narrowly missing people below.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 4.30pm yesterday and the 156-year-old structure was evacuated.

She was treated at the scene before being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where she currently remains.The extent of her injuries are unclear.

Pictures show a large hole in the section of the flooring where she fell.

A witness who was at the beach with his children told Manchester Evening News: “I was walking on the beach with my kids and heard a thud a huge thud next to me nearly on top of my head.’

“A lady ploughed to the floor, smashing through the Central Pier. I was absolutely terrified… I thought she was dead.”

Yesterday, a Lancashire Police spokesperson said: “We have received a report of a woman having fallen through a section of the pier in Blackpool at around 4.30pm today.”

An ambulance spokesperson said a critical care paramedic team was sent to the scene where the woman was given initial treatment for her injuries.
