Antim Panghal Paris Olympics 2024 Wrestling 53kg Event: When And Where To Watch Indian Wrestler LIVE In India
Indian wrestler Antim Panghal will make her Olympics debut at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday (August 7) when she begins her campaign in the women wrestling 53kg category against Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil in the pre-quarterfinals round. Antim is a two-time junior world champion and world championships medallist as well.
She will be the youngest wrestler at the Paris Olympics, aged just 19 years and hails from Hisar in Haryana. Antim had managed to win a Paris Olympics quota berth after winning a bronze medal in the women’s 53kg category at the World Championships last year. She lost to Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus in the semis, but defeated Sweden’s Jonna Malmgren, a two-time European champion, to win the bronze there.
Apart from winning bronze at the World Championships, Antim won a silver medal at the Asian Championships in Astana, where she lost to Japan’s star wrestler Akari Fujinami. She also defended her U-20 world crown and went on to clinch a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2023 in October.
Fujinami and Sweden’s Emma Malmgren will be Antim’s big competitors and will be in the other half of the draw. If Antim moves up into the quarterfinals, she is expected to take on fifth seed Maria Prevolaraki of Greece Or Annika Wendle of Germany.
Fujinami is the reigning two-time world champion, the current Asian Games gold medallist and also a two-time reigning Asian champion, who is on an unbeaten streak in well over a hundred matches now. The event also has the People’s Republic of China’s Pang Qianyu, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and a two-time worlds medal winner.
Antim has been hampered by the lack of access to her support staff, who have been unable to visit the Indian wrestler due to lack of daily passes for the Olympics Athletes Village available. Antim’s coach Bhagat Singh, sparring partner Vikas, physio Heera Mundluru and masseur Nisha landed in Paris on August 3 but haven’t been able to regularly meet the Indian wrestler.
