Lollipop Chainsaw RePop’s release date moved up, but only in the west

Lollipop Chainsaw RePop, the remaster of the hack-and-slash cult hit from 2012, had its launch date in the west moved up two weeks by Dragami Games.

Lollipop Chainsaw RePop is now launching Sept. 12 in North and South America and Europe. The ode to grindhouse zombie flicks and the American cult of cheerleading had been tabbed for a Sept. 26 launch.

Its launch date remains Sept. 26 in Japan. Final pricing for the game was also set on Monday at $44.99, five dollars less than the originally stated price. Lollipop Chainsaw RePop will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC via Steam, and Xbox Series X.

What is Lollipop Chainsaw about, anyway?

Lollipop Chainsaw was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, a studio known for the stylish, and over-the-top hack-and-slash franchises Killer 7 and No More Heroes. Filmmaker James Gunn even contributed to the writing.

The game is an ode to grindhouse zombie slasher movies, in particular the ones made by John Romero. This, however, has a bit more of an occult influence on the story. It stars Juliet Starling, a cheerleader at San Romero high who, it turns out, also belongs to a zombie-hunting family.

When a zombie outbreak threatens her school, Juliet steps in, and the rest of the game is actually about saving her boyfriend’s soul. Juliet mows through the hordes with an outlandish chainsaw; the fun is in the combos and executions she can perform.

It is an extremely strange game, to say the least. Reviews were middling for such a splashily marketed game, and many critics complained about the sexy costumes players could unlock. Lollipop Chainsaw did go on to become Grasshopper Manufacture’s most successful game (by sales).

Grasshopper Manufacture is not involved in the remake. Dragami Games, established 2022, is the successor to Lollipop Chainsaw’s original publisher, Kadokawa Games.
