Winter swimmers complain about Limassol pollution
Pollution in Limassol’s waters is rampant, a team of winter swimmers from the city claimed on Tuesday, calling on the government to enter a public dialogue on the matter.
The letter signed by the Winter Swimmers and Friends ‘Akti Olymbion’ accused “major business interests of taking advantage of the state’s failure to act.”
Chairwoman Erma Stylianides said it has been years since Cyprus has been in trouble over the matter “and we still have yet to harmonise with EU laws.”
She proposed there should be a 24-hour coastguard to arrest and punish those spotted polluting the sea.
The letter expressed the hope that Limassol mayor and the city’s district governor would take on the matter “plaguing swimmers for years.”
