Registration opens for Schenectady Co. waste collection event

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Registration is open for the third of four Household Hazardous Waste Collection Programs in Schenectady. The event, taking place at SUNY Schenectady, is a free program offered to Schenectady County residents.

The program allows County residents to bring unwanted chemicals, paints and other materials to the collection site for environmentally sound disposal. According to the County, during the four events hosted in 2023, over 25,000 gallons of liquid materials, including over 8,000 gallons of paint were disposed of.

Event Details:

  • Date: Saturday, August 24, 2024
  • Time: 8:30- 11:30 a.m.
  • Location: SUNY Schenectady's back parking lot, 78 Washington Avenue
  • Participant should use the State Street ramps, the Washington Avenue will be exit-only.

"Our Household Hazardous Waste events make it easy for residents and families to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals," Sara Mae Pratt, Schenectady County legislator and chair of the Environmental Conservation, Renewable Energy and Parks Committee, said in a statement. "Properly disposing of these chemicals helps to protect our environment and keeps out community healthy and safe."

Materials Accepted (original containers and labels, if possible):

  • Leftover or unused household cleaners
  • Paint and paint-related items
  • Lawn and garden chemicals
  • Automobile fluids
  • Other hazardous materials

Materials Not Accepted:

  • Empty paint cans
  • Motor Oil
  • Light bulbs and/or fluorescent lamps
  • Batteries
  • Explosives and/or ammunition
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Medical waste
  • Grill-sized propane tanks
  • Electronics, including televisions and computers
  • Empty aerosol containers

Space is limited and registration is required, according to the County. Those interested in disposing any materials listed above, can register online at Schenectady County's website or by calling 518-388-4775.
