ST. MARYS (KSNT) - A northeast Kansas school district is several thousand dollars richer this week after it got a surprise visit from the Kansas State Treasurer.

Staff at USD 321 Kaw Valley Unified School District has an extra $41,000 in its pockets following its discovery by staff with the Kansas State Treasurer's Office. The money comes from unclaimed properties, which are managed by the treasurer, which was presented as a check to USD 321's Superintendent Kerry Lacock on Monday, Aug. 5.

"This is a great reminder for all of us to look for entities that have unclaimed property," Steven Johnson, Kansas state treasurer said. "Our website is... if you go to that site, click on search unclaimed property and it will bring your to the site."

Lacock told 27 News the school plans to use the cash to fix up its doors to help increase safety for students.

Earlier this year, the Kansas State Treasurer's Office shared that more than $575 million was unclaimed in the state.
