Montage shows Fox News hosts try — and fail — to get Trump to walk back certain remarks

A new video montage published Monday by The Bulwark shows former President Donald Trump repeatedly struggle to walk back his own statements, even when teed up by Fox News.

Will Saletan, writer for the publication, shares the montage on the Bulwark's YouTube channel. The searing 11-minute video touches on Trump's brags about his own intellect, his vow to use the criminal justice system for retribution against his foes, and his statement to Christians that they won't have to vote again after this year.

"Trump loves to brag about how smart he is and how stupid his opponents are," Saletan wrote in promoting the video on the social media site Threads. "So we did a video breakdown of his interviews on Fox. What we found: The hosts keep trying to pull his foot out of his mouth. But he’s too dumb and stubborn to get the message."

Trump, Saletan pointed out in the video, "can't let go" of his grievances, leading to an awkward moment with Fox News anchor Sean Hannity.

"That was a good try by Hannity," said Saletan. "He wants Trump to let go of his grievances. But Trump can't let go. He repeats the grievances and says he's got every right to go after Biden."

When Hannity tries to "spoon-feed the right words" to Trump, the MAGA leader still refuses to walk back his statement.

"Will you pledge to restore equal justice, equal application of our laws, end this practice of weaponization. Is that a promise you're going to make?" asks Hannity.

"You have to do it," Trump responds. "But it's awful — look I know you want me to say [inaudible] But I don't want to look naive. What they've done to the Republican Party, they want to arrest on no crime, they want to arrest the person that won the nomination in a landslide. It was nobody even close, in a landslide. The person that got millions of votes, more votes than any other sitting president in history in the last election."

"There he goes," chides Saletan, "back to the grievances, the self-pity and the ego. Hannity tried his best, but Trump just would not take the hint."
