New Balance Champions the Illustrious 808 Drum Machine With the Tiago Lemos Skate Sneaker

0

New Balance Numeric and its signature skater Tiago Lemos are preparing to release a sneaker modeled after one of the most influential pieces of equipment in music.

The New Balance Numeric Tiago Lemos 808 is getting a collaboration with the drum machine that shares the same number, the legendary Roland TR-808. A predominantly black color scheme with accents in white, red, yellow and orange mirrors the 808’s front panel on the suede and mesh sneaker, while an attached keychain depicts the drum machine itself.

“Rhythm Composer,” as in the end of the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer’s full name is printed onto the shoe’s robust heel counter in a red to orange gradient, and the logos for both the Roland and TR-808 appear on the tongue. Inside, an orange insole is printed with marks for New Balance Numeric, Lemos, the TR-808 and Roland.

“Hip-hop has been the soundtrack for my skating, and at the heart of many classics was the 808,” Lemos told Music Radar. “To have a collaboration with the legendary Roland 808 on my shoe is an honor.”

Chances are, the 808 is the only drum machine you know by name, if not the only piece of electronic musical equipment. Although it was considered a commercial failure when it was on the market between 1980 and 1983, it would garner a cult following and eventually become a pillar of hip-hop, electronic and pop. As one of the first drum machines that could program rhythms rather than using preset patterns, it creates a sound that’s more futuristic than realistic and is known in particular for its powerful bass drum.

New Balance launched the Numeric 808 model in 2022 as the second signature sneaker for Lemos, the Brazilian skater. It features a distinctly ’90s look, but with modern technology including lightweight Rev cushioning and an Ndurance outsole. Ghillies also help to protect the laces from shredding, secures the foot.

The Roland x New Balance Numeric Tiago Lemos 808 will release on Thursday, August 8, aka “808 Day,” through New Balance’s website. Pricing is set at $120.
