Supreme Court smacks down lawsuit seeking to block Trump prosecution in New York

The United States Supreme Court this week denied Missouri Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey's request to block Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's prosecution of former President Donald Trump.

Earlier this year, Bailey filed a lawsuit against Bragg at the high court "for violating Missourians’ First Amendment right to hear from a presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election," the Missouri attorney general said in a statement.

"Bailey’s lawsuit asserts that New York’s illicit prosecution, gag order, and sentencing of President Trump has undermined his ability to campaign for president. This overt meddling in a presidential election sabotages Missourians’ ability to hear from and cast a fully-informed vote for president mere months before the election," the office claimed.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the request.

"Missouri's motion for leave to file a bill of complaint is denied, and its motion for preliminary relief or a stay is dismissed as moot," the high court's statement noted. "Justice Thomas and Justice Alito would grant the motion for leave to file the bill of complaint but would not grant other relief."
