Georgiou frustrated but not disappointed with sixth place

Cypriot gymnast Marios Georgiou, who finished sixth in the men’s horizontal bar final at the Paris Olympics, said he was “very satisfied” with his performance, having achieved one of the greatest successes in Cyprus’ Olympic history.

He said some time ago the Olympic finals would have been just a dream.

The 26-year-old gymnast finished outside the podium, having managed a “perfect programme”.

Georgiou estimated that on his exit and with the momentum he had generated, he would be high and would land well, however when he saw the floor he realised he was “lower than I should have been”, which “cost us the third place”.

The gymnast is the fourth Cypriot athlete ever to finish in the top six.

Georgiou said he was “very frustrated, but cannot say I am disappointed, because I am in the finals of the Olympics.”

Asked about his future plans, Georgiou said he would be resting for two or three weeks before training again.

“I believe I will get to the 2028 games and I wild be a protagonist,” he said.
