NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Renters won’t get far with $1,500 in New York City, according to a new study from RentCafe.

RentCafe found that renters in New York City get only 228 square feet for $1,500 per month, the worst deal of any large city in the United States.

It’s 83% less space than renters get in the most cost-effective city at the $1,500 price point, Wichita, Kansas, where a 1,359-square-foot apartment costs $1,500.

The second-worst deals are in Brooklyn, where renters get 300 square feet for $1,500 a month, according to the study. Jersey City and Queens also sat near the bottom of the 100-city ranking, both offering less than 400 square feet for the price.

The only city in the region that sat near the middle of the ranking was Buffalo, where renters can get an 881-square-foot apartment for $1,500.

The ranking considered U.S. cities with populations over 225,000 people and calculated the average price per square foot using properties of 50 or more units.

According to Apartments.com, the average monthly rent in New York City is $3,813 for a 602-square-foot one-bedroom apartment, or $3,122 per month for a 446-square-foot studio.
