8/5/2024: Strong storms possible this afternoon

0

The latest Storm Tracker Forecast from meteorologist Matt Mackie:

After a dry and bright start to the day, an incoming front will bring a chance for showers and a few strong storms this afternoon.

Temperatures will warm quickly into the mid or upper 80's - some from Albany to the south could touch the 90 degree mark!

That will lend itself to some potential severe weather - storms will push into the Adirondacks and North Country as early as 1 or 2 PM. The Capital District and points south are more likely to see the the active weather between 4 and 8 PM. The strongest storms will be capable of producing gusty winds and hail.

The front will get held up along the coast for tonight and Tuesday - close enough to bring us more rounds of showers at times. Temperatures will run much cooler, with highs only in the 70's.

While a few lingering showers are possible south of Albany on Wednesday, most everyone else will stay dry with brighter skies. Thursday looks downright beautiful across the whole region, with a refreshing start and afternoon highs right around 80. Low humidity, too!

Then, we turn our attention to the big story in the weather world - Hurricane Debby. The storm made landfall as a Category 1 this morning along the Gulf Coast of Florida. It could bring historic amounts of rain along the coast from northeast Florida through Georgia and into the Carolinas over the coming days - perhaps 10-20 inches or more in some isolated spots.

Tropical moisture riding out in front of the remnants of Hurricane Debby may approach the Northeast for Friday and the weekend.

While it remains to be see exactly how heavy and long lasting the rain will be locally, it should not be anything like the intense rain they will down south.
