Council Leader responds following serious disorder over the weekend

Statement from Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, on the weekend’s serious disorder.

“The events of the last few days have been devastating for Liverpool and our wider city region but have also brought out some of the best in our communities.

“I have expressed our deep gratitude to our partners in the police and fire service for their actions to keep Liverpool safe. Thanks also to the many Council staff who responded so effectively, in supporting the emergency services, clearing up after the disorder and now helping our residents and communities to recover, including outreach and reassurance work within communities and at places of worship.

“The police continue to have a strong presence across the city, and swift action is being taken to identify the perpetrators and apply the law forcefully, with a number of people already in court today.

“The Spellow Library and Community Hub, which only recently benefited from considerable investment, has been severely damaged. This has been heartbreaking for our staff and local residents who have worked so hard to make it such an important community asset. We are undertaking urgent assessments of the building and making arrangements to temporarily deliver services from other nearby locations.

“I would like to thank the very many residents who have been in touch with supportive messages to express their disgust at what has happened, and have offered to help in any way they can.”
