IND vs SL ODI Super Over Controversy- Here’s What Rule Says
As the Indian cricket team plays against Sri Lanka, their first match tied against the hosts in the very first match. This was not something to be shocked about as India has had a few amount of tied matches, but what was shocking was, that the tied match did not feature a super over. The match was declared a simple ‘tie’. Even though the ICC’s playing conditions state that in case of tied contests, it is mandatory to do a final 1-over game to find the winner.
Though there is the condition given by ICC, the on-field umpires Joel Wilson and Raveendra Wimalasiri decided not to go for a Super Over, and keep the final result as a tie.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma was playing different than his other mates who were struggling against spin bowling as Sri Lanka managed to take out a tie against India in a low-score opening ODI in Colombo.
During their chase of 231, Rohit made 58 off 47 balls, which helped the team reach 71 by the 10th over. However, all other batters were not playing comfortably as there were mostly spinners in the Lankan team, such as skipper Charith Asalanka, who got back-to back- wickets and played his important part in this 44th tie in history of ODI cricket.
ICC’s condition on Ties ODIs:
“If the teams’ scores are equal after both innings have been completed (if applicable under DLS), then a Super Over shall be played. If the Super Over is a tie, then unless exceptional circumstances arise subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Should it not be possible to play or to complete the Super Overs needed to determine a winner, the match shall be tied.”
