YouTube Gold: The Final Scene From The Final Episode Of Newhart
One of the more inspired endings in TV history
Bob Newhart, who died on July 18th, did something that not many people have done: he had two very funny shows that were both critically acclaimed. His first was the Bob Newart Show, which aired on CBS from 1972-78 and then Newhart, which also aired on CBS, from 1982-1990.
In the first show, Newhart played a psychologist and most of his friends and associates were in need of therapy. His wife, Emily, was a notable exception to the neuroses that surrounded Newhart.
In the second show, he played an innkeeper in a small Vermont town. In the final episode of the final season of Newhart, all of the town’s eccentrics came to the inn and pushed mild-mannered Bob over the edge and after being accidentally struck by a golf ball, he passed out...only to wake up in bed with Emily to find out that the entire show had been a dream.
It was a parody of the famous “Who Shot JR” cliffhanger from Dallas, but it was brilliantly and hilariously done and is now widely regarded as a landmark in television history.
