Tommy Fleetwood takes Olympics 2024 silver after Scottie Scheffler claims gold with blistering course record 62

TOMMY FLEETWOOD claimed Olympic silver in the golf as he finished one shot behind World No1 Scottie Scheffler – who produced a course record 62 to scoop gold for USA.

Fleetwood, 33, looked to have taken full advantage of Jon Rahm dropping off the pace in the final round as he moved level with Scheffler at the top of the leaderboard.

But after Scheffler finished with an unprecedented round of 62 at Le Golf National, Fleetwood then bogeyed the 17th to hand the American victory.

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who won The Masters in 2021, took bronze.

Rahm had led by one shot heading into Sunday’s finale, but ended up off the podium, four shots back.

Fleetwood has never won a major, finishing second at the US Open in 2018, while he also claimed the runners-up spot at The Open in 2019.

He has also been a part of three of Europe’s Ryder Cup triumphs in 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Rory McIlroy finished joint-fifth alongside Rahm but behind Frenchman Victor Perez in fourth.

Denmark’s Nicolai Hoejgaard and South Korea’s Joo-Hyung Kim rounded out the top eight ahead of a five-way tie for ninth on 12 under.

But it was Scheffler’s day as he claimed gold to go with his two major triumphs.

The American won The Masters back in 2022, beating McIlroy by three shots.

And he repeated the feat at Augusta earlier this year with a dominant display to beat Ludvig Aberg by four shots.
