Two men arrested in Rensselaer for alleged burglary, grand larceny

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The Rensselaer Police Department arrested two men on Tuesday, July 30, on an outstanding warrant and for possessing stolen property from three places. Police said they arrested Carlos Omar Garcia-Hernandez, 32, of Mexico, and Jimmy Mauricio Chancusig Quilumba, 24, of Ecuador, after they knocked on doors near 3rd Ave and High Street.

Police said they received reports of Garcia-Hernandez and Quilumba carrying weedwhackers, backpacks, and a suitcase and stopped the men near 146 3rd Ave. Police discovered that Garcia-Hernandez had an outstanding warrant in New Mexico for felony drug possession, and Quilumba possessed stolen property from three different places.

When attempting to identify the two men, Garcia-Hernandez was fingerprinted based on the New Mexico warrant, and Quilumba had an identification card from New York City and a passport. Police added Garcia-Hernandez had had Amtrak tickets to travel from New York City to Portland, Oregon.

When Garcia-Hernandez's fingerprints were returned, the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration Customs Enforcement contacted Rensselaer Police, confirming his identity. Both men were found to be illegally in the country by Deportation Officers from Enforcement and Removal Operations.

Garcia-Hernandez and Quilumba were arraigned in Rensselaer City Court and remain in Rensselaer County Jail. Both men were issued Immigration Detainers.
