Four bargain ways to protect your clothes from moths this summer
DESPITE a worrying drop in butterfly numbers, their pesky moth cousins are here to plague our wardrobes.
Protect yourself against a hole lot of disappointment and the extra cost of new clothes with this handy advice.
MOTH SOS: If you have discovered a moth infestation, take instant action by washing clothes on a high temperature followed by the tumble drier on a high heat, if the fabric allows.
Next, take all your clothes out of your wardrobe and give them a good shake, then wipe out your wardrobe with hot soapy water.
DON’T WING IT: It’s not actually the moths that eat your clothes, it’s the tiny larvae.
You won’t realise it until you see the holes in your clothes.
Lulu O’Connor, founder of Clothes Doctor (clothes-doctor.com), says: “Moths love dirty, dark, and damp spaces, and can be attracted to dirt and body odours, and feeding on natural fibres.
“By keeping your most precious clothes on rotation or hanging them somewhere in the sun to air out, you can reduce the likelihood of moths setting up camp.”
STORE WARS: One of your best defences against a moth attack is good storage.
If you are packing away clothes, Lulu suggests storing them in plastic boxes rather than bags, which can trap moisture.
Add scents that repel moths, including eucalyptus, lavender, cedarwood, and orange oil.

JUST CHILL: We don’t mean you should leave the critters to create havoc.
Freezing clothes is also a way to save your threads.
If moths have already got into your wardrobe, freezing the affected clothes for a couple of weeks can ensure the larvae and eggs die off.
Lulu says: “Place your garments in air-tight moth-proof bags. Freeze garments up to two weeks for full effect.”
