Family of off-duty Saint Landry Parish corrections officer looking for answers in her death

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) - The family of an off-duty corrections officer who was killed in April is looking for answers into her death. They are pleading for anyone with information to come forward to help them find closure.

Chanterria "Macky" Albert, 22, was killed in April as she was in her car, off-duty in Opelousas. Witnesses say they heard about 30 gunshots, though it only took one to take Macky's life. Another person was also shot but survived. More than two months later, Macky still does not have justice.

"I can't call heaven and say, 'Hey, can I talk to Macky?' I can't do that. It's hard because she didn't deserve to die. She didn't deserve it," Macky's aunt, Rechelle Milburn, said.

The crime scene photos the night Macky was killed on Park Avenue in Opelousas shows a gruesome scene. Shell casings covered the street. Macky's car was riddled with bullets.

"I don't question God's plan, but why would they hurt her?" her nanny questioned.

Macky would have been 23 years old on July 25. As her birthday came and went with no Macky, her family struggled.

"Just to know that I cannot be in her future to see her have kids, to see her get married, to see what her future had is heartbreaking because we talk about so many different things. Just to see my family so broken," Milburn said with tears in her eyes.

Macky was a St. Landry Parish Sheriff corrections officer. She followed in her mother's footsteps, as her mother was an accomplished sergeant. The mother-daughter duo worked side by side every day in law enforcement.

Her mother is now forced to visit all the same places she used to, but now, without her daughter and without knowing who took Macky's life.

"The person who did it or the people who did it, y'all know she didn't deserve it, but y'all chose. Yall chose to hurt her. You saw her. You chose to hurt her. You could've easily said, 'Not my target. Not my time.' You could have done anything, but you took somebody's child. You took somebody that we love away from us, and you cut her life short," Macky's aunt added.

The young corrections officer, described as smart, vibrant, and the life of the party, had plans to go back to school. Her bright future was stripped away in an instant.

"Everybody is just sitting down and saying, 'You have our condolences.' We get it. Justice. Please, justice," Milburn begged. "Give it to us. It won't bring her back, but it will give us a small sample of peace, a small sample. Because you can't replace her. You can't. Nobody can replace her."

If you have any information about Macky's death, contact the Opelousas Police Department submit a tip to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.
