Portland weekend roundup: Abba-inspired candlelight concert, Emo Nite, Fremont Fest
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Head into August with a weekend chock-full of activities, entertainment and art in the Rose City.
Candlelight: A Tribute to Abba
When: Friday, Aug. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 NE Alberta St, Portland, OR 97211
Have your “Mamma Mia!” moment at this event dedicated to the band whose songs inspired the film. A live musical ensemble will play Abba’s greatest hits, ranging from “Dancing Queen” and “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).”
Emo Nite
When: Friday, Aug. 2 at 9 p.m.

Want to hear your favorite pop-punk songs from the early 2000s? That’s what Emo Nite is all about. After its stop in Los Angeles, the popular party is coming to the Central Eastside District.
Vanport Jazz Festival
When: Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3
Where: Colwood Golf Center, 7313 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland, OR 97218
This festival annually honors jazz’s impact on the Black community of Vanport, which was once “the nation’s largest public housing project and the second-largest city in Oregon.” Portland native and Grammy-Award-winner Esperanza Spalding is among this year’s performers.
St. Johns Art Walk
When: Saturday, Aug. 3 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Where: N Lombard St. from N New York Ave. to N. Richmond Ave., Portland, OR 97203
The St. Johns Business District will hold an art walk that encourages the community to support local brands, restaurants and artists.
Fremont Fest
When: Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Where: NE Fremont St. from NE 42nd Ave. to NE 51 Ave., Portland, OR 97213
The Beaumont Business Association is hosting an ‘80s-themed Fremont Fest to commemorate its founding in 1984. More than 150 vendors will pop up for the event, which features live music and a kids’ play zone.
Viva Mexico! Con Mariachi Los Camperos
When: Sunday, Aug. 4 at 4 p.m.
Where: Newmark Theatre, 1111 SW Broadway, Portland, OR 97205
Famous mariachi ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos has performed in well-renowned concert venues like the Lincoln Center and Walt Disney Concert Hall, and is now bringing its talents to the Newmark Theatre.
Opera in the Park
When: Sunday, Aug. 4 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Peninsula Park, 700 N Rosa Parks Way, Portland, OR 97217
Once held in Washington Park, Opera in the Park has relocated from one rose garden to the next in its 22nd year. The music organization is presenting Giuseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata” in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation’s Summer Free for All.
