Movie legend, 91, makes U-turn on retirement – a year after announcing he’d QUIT Oscar winning film career
SIR Michael Caine has decided to make a U-turn on retirement from Hollywood a year after announcing he’d quit.
The movie legend, 91, is now set to publish a book on his guide to life.
Hodder & Stoughton will be a guide to life by the legendary actor which shows “anyone can blow the bloody doors off”.
It will be published on 7 November 2024.
Michael said: “I’m always asked questions—by fans, by other actors and friends, by my grandchildren.
“They want to know how I’ve lasted so long, how I handle fame, why I chose to do some of my films, which films and actors I like best and so forth.
“They also want to know what makes me tick, what makes me get up in the morning in my 90s, and whether I’ll ever retire (The answer to that one is ‘No!’).
“Over a long life, I’ve learnt a lot and had the opportunity to reflect. I’ve seen a new generation grow up, among them my own grandchildren, facing the world with all its challenges and problems.
“I hope they’ll find Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over: My Guide to Life helps them to be optimistic—and shows that anyone can blow the bloody doors off.”
The actor collaborated on the book with his friend, journalist and author Matt d’Ancona.
Speaking highly of their friendship and the project, Matt said: “Some of the most enjoyable conversations of my life have been with Sir Michael.
“He’s not only a brilliant storyteller, but also a man who’s been there and seen it all, whether it’s the Korean War or adventures in Hollywood.
“And, as we know, he’s a wonderful actor who never stops learning his craft.
“So Don’t Look Back, You’ll Trip Over: My Guide to Life is an enthralling distillation of wit and wisdom from a life rich in incident and anecdote.”
Michael confirmed his retirement decision in October last year, days after the release of his latest film, The Great Escaper.
The talented star – who has starred in over 180 movies – explained his decision came after he concluded that ‘you don’t have leading men at 90.’
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I keep saying I’m going to retire. Well I am now.
“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews… What am I going to do that will beat this?”
He continued: “The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. Or maybe 85.
“They’re not going to be the lead. You don’t have leading men at 90, you’re going to have young handsome boys and girls. So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.”
Michael has had a stellar career spanning seven decades and his extensive filmography includes hit films such as Zulu and The Italian Job.
More recently he had roles in Interstellar and The Dark Knight franchise alongside Christian Bale.
