Annita Demetriou most popular MP, survey shows

House Speaker and Disy Party leader Annita Demetriou is the most popular MP, regardless of party affiliation, according to a survey released on Friday. She is followed by opposition Akel MP Irene Charalambides.

The survey, conducted by Cypronetwork from July 2 to 29, asked 1,000 people to name three MPs they consider the best, regardless of the party they usually vote for. Demetriou topped the list with 28 per cent, followed by Charalambides with 11 per cent, Stefanos Stefanou with 10 per cent, Pavlos Mylonas with 8 per cent, Averof Neophytou with 7 per cent, and Efthimios Diplaros with 7 per cent.

When asked who they consider the best MP, the same names appeared but with lower percentages. Notably, the highest percentage of responses to this question was “none” at 20 per cent, with 21 per cent refusing to answer.

An interesting finding from the survey indicates a significant shift in voter sentiment: nearly 4 out of 10 Cypriots stated that they will vote for something other than the traditional parties in the upcoming elections. Conversely, a similar percentage (39 per cent) disagreed with this statement.

Regarding the question of whether, despite current developments, they will vote again for one of the traditional parties they voted for in the past, 47 per cent disagreed and only 30 per cent agreed.

Furthermore, when asked if there is a need for new parties or movements, 58 per cent agreed while 27 per cent disagreed.

Among those who agreed, the largest percentage had a university or postgraduate education. It is also worth noting that the percentage of both genders who agree with this claim is the same. According to the survey, 58 per cent of women and 58 per cent of men said they agree.

The survey also revealed that the high voter turnout and election of Fidias Panayiotou to the European Parliament were seen positively by 6 out of 10 Cypriots, with 7 out of 10 considering it a protest vote. Additionally, 48 per cent of respondents believe that Fidias Panayiotou will succeed in his new role.
