NYC officials to spray for mosquitos in these 2 boroughs

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will spray for mosquitos in two boroughs next week in an effort to lower the risk of West Nile virus.

The first spray will be on Staten Island between 8:30 p.m. on Monday and 6 a.m. on Tuesday. These are the neighborhoods that are getting sprayed:

• Arrochar
• Bay Terrace
• Dongan Hills
• Egbertville
• Eltingville
• Great Kills
• Lighthouse Hill
• Midland Beach
• New Dorp
• New Dorp Beach
• Oakwood Heights
• Richmond
• South Beach

Areas in Queens will then be sprayed between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning. These are the neighborhoods that are getting sprayed:

• Briarwood
• Elmhurst
• Forest Hills
• Forest Park
• Fresh Pond
• Glendale
• Hunters Point
• Jamaica Hills
• Kew Gardens
• Long Island City
• Maspeth
• Middle Village
• Rego Park
• Richmond Hill
• Ridgewood
• South Richmond Hill
• Sunnyside
• Sunnyside Gardens
• Woodhaven

Officials urge residents in those areas to stay indoors and keep the windows closed during the spraying. If you're exposed to the chemicals, wash your skin and clothes with soap and water.

West Nile virus was detected in mosquitos in all five boroughs, according to the DOH. There haven't been any positive cases of the virus in humans yet, but officials still urge residents to use mosquito repellent, wear shoes, socks, and long clothing and make sure all windows and doors have screens.

Most people experience mild to no symptoms if they're infected with West Nile virus. In more serious cases, symptoms can include high fever, headaches, neck stiffness and even vision loss or paralysis.
