AUSTIN (KXAN) — The United States women's basketball team worked harder than they would have liked in an 87-74 win over Belgium on Thursday at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Tied 23-23 after the first quarter, the U.S. outscored Belgium 23-15 in the second to take a 46-38 lead into halftime. However, Belgium didn't go away and cut the U.S. lead to 60-53 by the end of the third before the Americans put the game away with a strong fourth quarter.
Breanna Stewart poured in 26 points and A'ja Wilson notched a huge double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds for the U.S., the seven-time defending gold medalists. The U.S. has won 57 consecutive Olympic games, dating back to the 1992 Barcelona Games.
The win moved the U.S. to 2-0 in group play and qualified them for the quarterfinals. They'll play Germany at 10:15 a.m. CDT Sunday in their final group game.
