New York families to start receiving summer EBT food benefits

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Summer EBT food benefits are being distributed to help eligible New York families with school-aged children buy groceries.

Through the Summer EBT program, eligible families will receive a one-time installment of $120 per child on their EBT card. The money can be used to pay for groceries and other household essentials, according to the nonprofit No Kid Hungry New York.

“Summer EBT is a game-changer for hundreds of thousands of New York families. This extra support can mean the difference between kids having healthy meals at home this summer or facing hunger,” said Rachel Sabella, the director of No Kid Hungry New York.

Families could receive their one-time installment in August or as late as October.

Most eligible families will receive the money automatically, but some families may need to apply, according to the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.

For a child to receive Summer EBT benefits automatically, they must receive SNAP, Temporary Assistance benefits, be certified for free meals through Medicaid, or be eligible for free or reduced school meals through the National School Lunch Program, according to No Kid Hungry New York.

Families seeking to receive Summer EBT benefits can submit an application online. The deadline to apply is Sept. 3.
