GAME REPORT

USA-Japan 4-3

World No. 4 USA used an extra-inning balk to defeat No. 1 Japan and earn the World Championship Final home team advantage. Japan lost their first World Cup game since August 12, 2012, when they gave up 5-2 to the US in Edmonton.

Reigning Women's Baseball World Cup MVP Ayami Sato started for Japan. Jamie Baum took the mound for the United States.

Pitchers dominated the first three innings. Sato allowed the United States two hits and no runner in scoring position. Japan had one hit and reached second with one out in the bottom of the third.

The United States took the lead in the top of the fourth. With runners at the corners, Jilliam Albayati drove Sato's fifth pitch beyond the left-field wall for a three-run home run.

In the bottom of the fifth, Ayaka Deguchi put Japan on the scoreboard with a single up the middle. The US got out of the inning with a double play.

Yuna Tsuchiya relieved Sato in the top of the sixth.

Japan tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Miu Shiraishi doubled with runners at second and first, sending both home.

With the game tied and runners at the corners, the US replaced Baum with right-hander Maggie Meidlinger, who used four pitches to retire Iwami and get out of the inning.

Wakana Mori took the mound for Japan in the seventh.

US shorstop Valerie Perez sent the game to extra inning, stopping Yuki Kawabata's grounder up the middle with a diving catch and getting the third out at first.

The US took the lead in the top of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Mori balked to score Albayati, the lead tie-break runner, from third.

With runners at third and second, Maidlinger struck out Shiraishi in the bottom of the eighth to give the US the win and the home team advantage in the World Championship Final.
