Traffic impacted by water main break in west Topeka

Update 9:21 a.m.: The City of Topeka reports that utility crews are on site and working to locate and repair the water main. Service was shut off at 8:30 a.m. and is expected to last for 4-6 hours.

"This process generally lasts 4-6 hours, but we do not know how long these specific repairs will take at this time," Infrastructure Communications Specialist Amanda Knowland said. "Service will remain off until the repair is made."

Barricades are diverting motorists from 21st Street to Southwest Westport Drive.


TOPEKA (KSNT) - Drivers should consider taking alternate routes following a water main break that has prompted traffic to be diverted on 21st Street.

As of 8:50 a.m. on August 1, a water main break at SW 21st Street and SW Westport Drive is causing traffic disruptions. A 27 News reporter on the scene says a detour is in place for the area. Barricades are up to divert traffic.

Photos from the scene show water coming up from a hole in the ground and debris littering the road.

Kandrive.gov is showing traffic disruptions on the eastbound and westbound part of the street.

Last night a strong thunderstorm moved through Topeka causing several power outages and downed powerlines over roads. It is currently unknown if the storm caused the water main break.
