EMPORIA (KSNT) - The City of Emporia shared positive news about a ring-tailed lemur baby that had its first physical exam at the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia.

According to the city, "Daisy" had her first physical exam this week and she is healthy and thriving. The zoo said Daisy has continued to hit milestones and is very curious about her surroundings.

"She is eager to explore but knows that mom is only a hop away if she is feels uncomfortable or spooked by a grasshopper," the city wrote in a press release.

Lemurs are only found on the island of Madagascar and are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN). According to the ICUN, almost one-third of all lemur species in Madagascar are now critically endangered. The ICUN says 33 lemur species are critically endangered mainly due to deforestation and hunting.

"It is now believed that fewer than 2,400 individuals live in the wild, which makes the arrival of any new births critical for their long-term survival as a species," the city wrote the press release.
