Iran declares three days of national mourning following assassination of Ismail Haniyeh
President Massoud Pezeshkian of Iran has declared three days of national mourning following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh.
According to the announcement, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 31 July, 1 and 2 of August, will be observed as days of national mourning throughout Iran.
Meanwhile, Iran’s religious leader expressed condolences over the death of the Hamas political leader and emphasized that Israel has set the stage for severe retribution with this act.
The leader stated, “We consider it our duty to seek vengeance and justice for the martyrdom that occurred within the borders of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Ismail Haniyeh, who resided in Qatar, had traveled to Tehran for meetings with Iranian officials. This was his second visit to Iran since the Gaza conflict began. His assassination occurred during his third official visit to Tehran following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a second statement threatening that the assassination would be met with a “strong and painful response from the resistance front,” particularly from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
This threat reflects the heightened tensions and the significant impact of Haniyeh’s death on regional dynamics. The situation underscores the ongoing volatility in the region and the potential for further escalations in response to this incident.
