The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that the mastermind behind the September 11 attacks and two of his associates are set to “plead guilty” under a negotiated agreement.

According to a Pentagon statement released on Wednesday, July 31st, the three suspects have reached an agreement with prosecutors to confess their crimes.

Among the three suspects is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has been identified as the principal architect and mastermind behind the September 11 attacks.

The other two suspects are Walid Mohammed Salih Mubarak bin Attash and Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi, who have also agreed to confess their crimes to U.S. prosecutors.

The three suspects had previously not admitted to their roles in the September 11 attacks, and it is unclear what they have agreed to in return for this deal with the prosecutors.

Reports indicate that these three suspects have been held for years without trial at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

U.S. media reports, though the terms of the agreement have not been officially disclosed, suggest that the suspects have accepted the plea deal in exchange for prosecutors agreeing not to pursue the death penalty.

The September 11 attacks, which occurred in 2001, are considered one of the most shocking acts of terrorism in recent decades, reshaping global order.

This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing legal and historical aftermath of the September 11 attacks, potentially bringing closure to one of the most devastating terrorist events in history while also highlighting the complexities of justice in such high-profile cases.
