Pakistan imposes new restrictions on Afghanistan freight trucks

The Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan has announced that it will not allow entry into the country for Afghanistan freight trucks without temporary transit passes, visas, or passports.

This directive was issued on Thursday, August 1st, stating, “We do not permit entry to Afghanistan freight trucks without temporary transit passes.” The announcement specifies that trucks carrying transit goods are exempt from this new regulation.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Commerce of Pakistan has emphasized that some truck drivers have received temporary passes. Earlier reports from Pakistani media had indicated that, as per a new agreement between authorities of both countries, from July 15th of this year, freight trucks carrying commercial goods between Afghanistan and Pakistan can no longer operate without obtaining temporary transit passes.

However, the Taliban Ministry of Industry and Commerce has also announced a new agreement with Pakistan, stating that truck drivers can travel for another year with temporary documents.

Meanwhile, Mumtaz Baloch, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that Islamabad has not revoked the “single-document procedure” at its border crossings with Afghanistan.

This situation arises amidst continuous criticism from traders and freight truck drivers in the country regarding the transit conditions and customs challenges between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
