Postecoglou explains where Bergvall and Gray need to improve after K-League clash
Ange Postecoglou set up his midfield with a trio of Pape Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, and Archie Gray for the friendly against K-League all-stars, and the Spurs boss had praise for the three players, as well as highlighting what they need to work on.
Room for improvement for Gray and Bergvall
While many expected Spurs to line up with a more experienced midfield, Postecoglou opted to give new signings Gray and Bergvall a runout together in the middle of the park.
Spurs defeated the best of the K-League 4-3 in a thrilling friendly at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Wednesday and, speaking after the game, Postecoglou revealed how happy he was with the two young midfielders.
He said (via Football.London): “I thought it worked ok. Obviously, they are three very young players in that midfield set-up and as you said, the first time they had played together. But yeah, for the most part, I thought they handled it pretty well.”
On Bergvall, Postecoglou had some notes, though: “I think Lucas found it tough physically. It’s a very demanding role in there and it’s gonna take us a while to get him up to speed from a physical perspective, but you can see the quality he has when he’s on the ball.”
Likewise, for Gray, adding: “Archie, he’s what he’s shown the whole time. He’s been very composed, he seems to understand the game really well and, and, you know, for the most part, I thought he was taking up the right positions. But again, physically I think we’re gonna have to build him up.”
Pape Sarr shows his experience
There was no such critique of Sarr, however, who got a glowing review all around from the gaffer: “I thought Pape’s running is just unbelievable. He’s a benchmark for us in that midfield area.
“I think the three of them – considering they’re so young and that’s the exciting bit – if we keep pushing them and improving them, they’re going be very good footballers for us.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We probably won’t see that midfield three playing together very often this season, but there’s no doubt about it: They are the future for Spurs. They’re all so talented, and it’s incredibly exciting to think about how far they can develop.
