Over €41m spent in 2023 for state-funded private healthcare

Over €41 million was paid in 2023 to private hospitals for treating patients referred through the national health scheme (Gesy), with one medical establishment in Cyprus receiving over €6 million.

According to information obtained by philenews, €25,243,667 was spent on treatments abroad and €15,775,665 for private treatment locally.

Patients are referred for private healthcare when Gesy does not provide the services they need.

Philenews has published a list of hospitals, indicating that the C&S American Heart Institute Limited received €6,236,446 in 2023 from the health ministry.

The highest amount abroad was €5,144,404, paid to MC Medical Limited Deutsche Verbindungsstelle Krankenversicherung – Ausland.

Expenses abroad include anything from air tickets to artificial limbs and recovery.

Others abroad who were paid by the health ministry are Aviomedic Ltd €3,446,904, George Papanikolaou General Hospital of Thessaloniki €1,374,030, Schneider Children’s Medical Centre of Israel €1,333,499, Imer Medical Services Limited €1,314,696, Life Line Aviation AE €1,204,150 and Diagnostic and Therapeutic Centre of Athens HYGEIA SA €1,172,415.

For patients treated privately in Cyprus, the health ministry paid the C&S American Heart Institute Limited €6,236,446, Eveningfall Investments Ltd €1,245,724 and Ygia Polyclinic Private Hospital €1,060,172.

Other medical establishments in Cyprus and abroad received less than €1m each.
