Dr. Vara is the co-founder of the hair transplant clinic The Treatment Rooms London.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, he shared advice for boosting hair health.

OUTSTANDING OILS

Dr. Vara said it may be worth trying a variety of hair growth methods to see which works best for you.

He said a lot of people forget to include their scalp in their hair care regimen, but it can be beneficial for hair growth.

“A regular scalp massage can enhance blood circulation to hair follicles, and using your fingertips will minimize breakages,” he said.

“Applying hair oils to your scalp can also prevent dry skin which in turn aids better hair growth.”

He said natural remedies keep the hair shaft healthy and hydrated.

“Coconut oil is great for providing moisture and reducing protein loss, whereas black seed oil helps to soothe irritating scalp conditions and foster growth,” he said.

He added that natural ingredients are always the best option when buying haircare products.

“Many shampoos contain parabens and certain alcohols, but these can have a dehydrating effect on both the hair and the scalp,” he said.

“Synthetic fragrances, or ‘parfum’, can also strip away at the scalp’s natural oils, disrupting the hair’s growth cycle.”

SUPER SUPPLEMENTS

Dr. Vara said some lifestyle changes encourage healthy hair growth, such as eating adequate protein and iron.

“Nutrition can have a bigger impact on your hair than you may think.

“It’s important to maintain a well-balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients such as protein, iron, and zinc.

For those with curly or more textured hair, a wide-toothed comb is often better for detangling, avoiding frizz and breakages.

“Supplements such as biotin and zinc are essential for biological functions, contributing to keratin production, hair growth cycle support, and follicle integrity.

“We advise our patients not to drastically restrict their calorie intake as this will affect your hair growth.”

BRILLIANT BRUSHES

Dr. Vara recommended said damaging hair styling techniques should be avoided when trying to grow hair.

These include straightening, as well as wearing high, and tight ponytails or buns.

“In terms of styling, it’s important to choose the best brush or comb for your hair type,” he said.

“For those with finer hair, we’d recommend using a brush with natural bristles as this is best for adding volume.

“For those with curly or more textured hair, a wide-toothed comb is often better for detangling, avoiding frizz and breakages.”

He said brushing hair helps to distribute scalp oils but doing it too often can do “more harm than good.”

“This is also seen with aggressive brushing, which can include brushing wet hair and trying to brush when the strands of hair aren’t properly detangled, as this pulls too hard on the scalp,” he said.

TRICHOLOGIST TREAMENTS

Dr. Vara said he’s come across unconventional hair growth tips from his patients such as washing locks with sparkling water.

He confessed that he’s unsure if the hack is effective for preventing hair loss but said it’s unlikely to harm tresses.

“Our recommendation is generally to stick to a remedy that has been proven to work,” he said.

“If you are suffering from hair loss that is not being managed, reach out to a hair loss professional who will be able to advise appropriately.”

Dr. Vara said a GP or trichologist is often better to speak to about hair health rather than a salon.

He said a specialist will be able to advise on prescription treatments for boosting hair growth such as Finasteride or Minoxidil.
