A Tribute to Anshuman Gaekwad: PM Modi, Gambhir, and Harbhajan Reflect on His Impact
Following the former cricket player’s death from cancer, Anshuman Gaekwad was described as a thorough “gentleman” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Harbhajan Singh, and head coach of India Gautam Gambhir.
On Saturday night, Gaekwad, who played, coached, and served as a selector for Indian cricket, passed away from blood cancer.
In 40 Test matches and 15 ODIs, he wore the Indian shirt.
“Saddened by news of the demise of Anshuman Gaekwad ji. May god give strength to his family & loved ones,” wrote Gambhir, who is currently in Sri Lanka with the Indian team for the white-ball series, on his X account.
Since Gaekwad was the team coach when Harbhajan made his debut on the international scene in 1998, the two maintained a close relationship.
“Anshuman Gaekwad’s sir demise is a heartbreaking news. Have fond memories of making my Test debut under his coaching.
“A thorough gentleman. Indian cricket will be poorer in his absence. Rest in Peace. Condolences to family,” said Harbhajan, who went on to play 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is for the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for Gaekwad’s passing and noted his significant contribution to Indian cricket.
“Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a gifted player and an outstanding coach. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,” Modi said through his official X account.
Home Minister Amit Shah remarked in his condolence message via an X post that Gaekwad’s abilities “enhanced” Indian cricket.
“Deeply saddened by the demise of Anshuman Gaekwad Ji, a legendary cricketer whose cricketing skills enhanced the pride of Indian cricket.
“My heartfelt condolences are with his family and followers during this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” said Shah.
The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, expressed his sympathies to Mr. Aunshuman Gaekwad’s family and friends. Sad for the cricket community as a whole. May peace be upon his soul.”
Recently, the BCCI paid Rs 1 crore toward Gaekwad’s medical bills while he was receiving treatment at London’s Kings’ College Hospital.
Former captain of Pakistan Ramiz Raja also shared his thoughts on Gaekwad, recalling him as a “gallant” individual.
“Deeply saddened by passing of Anshuman Gaekwad. An affable, polished gentleman, he was my late brother’s buddy which made me fond of him!! Fought gallantly against cancer and gave it his all – bit like his batting,” said Raja.
