VIDEO: Highlights from Wednesday's action at the 2024 Olympics
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The United States men's basketball team had a much easier time against South Sudan this time around, cruising to a 103-86 win Wednesday after a one-point win over the African champs in exhibition play before the Paris Olympics.
Bam Adebayo led the U.S. with 18 points while LeBron James scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had five assists. Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Haliburton saw their first action after not playing in the tournament-opening game against Serbia while Joel Embiid sat out against South Sudan.
The U.S. led 26-14 after the first quarter and 55-36 at halftime. South Sudan outscored the Americans 50-48 in the second half.
With the win, the U.S. qualified for the quarterfinals with one more group game against Puerto Rico at 10:15 a.m. CDT Saturday.
Katie Ledecky smashes Olympic record in 1,500-meter freestyle to win gold
U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky blasted the field in the 1,500-meter freestyle, shattering the Olympic record by five seconds and winning by more than 10. It was her eighth career gold medal, finishing with a time of 15 minutes, 30.02 seconds. She's now tied with Jenny Thompson for most Olympic golds by an American woman in the pool and she has 12 medals overall, tied with the trio of Thompson, Natalie Coughlin and Dara Torres.
Ledecky can add to her medal count in Thursday's 4x200 freestyle relay and the 800 freestyle that begins with prelims Friday.
