'Same old show’: Harris claps back at 'divisive' Trump’s attack on her racial identity

Kamala Harris took the high road in addressing Donald Trump’s attack on her racial identity Wednesday, avoiding any low blows while addressing a group of Black sorority members in Houston Wednesday.

Harris took the stage Wednesday just hours after Trump gave a chaotic interview at a conference for Black journalists in Chicago, where he claimed that “all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person.”

At the event for Black sorority Sigma Gamma Rho, Harris mostly stuck to her policy message during her event in Houston Wednesday night, but did respond to Trump’s remarks.

“It was the same old show,” Harris said. “The divisiveness and the disrespect. Let me just say the American people deserve better.”

She went on to say the nation needs a leader “who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts,” and “who understands that our differences do not divide; they are an essential source of our strength.”

Harris characterized her presidential campaign against Trump as a fight for the future versus “those that are trying to take us backward.”

With the election just over 3 months away, Harris emphasized that in order to win, Democrats need to take action.

“When we organize, mountains move,” Harris said. “When we mobilize, nations change. And when we vote, we make history.”
