Expert mechanic shares three tricks to make your engine ‘last over 400,000 miles’ & save £100s in repair bills

AN EXPERT mechanic has shared three tricks you can use to make your engine “last for 400,000 miles” – and save you hundreds in repair bills.

The motors whizz urged drivers to undertake some easy DIY maintenance, which can cost as little as £10.

Scotty Kilmer, who has been working on cars for half a century, shared the helpful tips on his YouTube channel.

He advised keeping consistent service intervals and warned viewers to be wary of products that promise to extend these, such as synthetic oils.

To demonstrate, Scotty used one of his own cars and showed off the stunning odometer reading.

He explained: “This engine has 389,000 miles on it and it still runs like a clock.

“The oil and filters have been changed at least every 5,000 miles.

“Oil is cheap, engines are expensive.

“The coolant has been changed once every five years.

“You don’t want corroded coolant to eat up your engine.

“And if you want your engine to last, don’t rev it into the red line, that will make things wear out faster.”

The combination of these three measures has, he claimed, left his Toyota pick up in tip-top condition despite its heavy usage.

Scotty also had a bonus fourth tip for those whose vehicle makes use of a rubber timing belt rather than a chain.

He advised changing this every 1,000 miles or else it can become brittle, snap and potentially damage the engine.

Oil and coolant changes can be easily done at home, while a timing belt swap is a more difficult job unless you’re an experienced DIY tinkerer.

However, getting all three services done at a garage will only come to about £100-200, compared to the price of an engine replacement if you fail to do them, which can be upward of £2,000.

Scotty added: “These are simple things to do to make your complex engine last hundreds of thousands of miles.”

It comes after drivers were warned of holiday misery as Brits are set to be forced into 220 miles of motorway roadworks this summer.
