China's Xi Jinping calls for strong border defences ahead of PLA anniversary

China's President Xi Jinping has emphasized the need for robust border, sea, and air defences to safeguard the country's sovereignty and maritime interests, according to Xinhua. Speaking at a Communist Party session, Xi highlighted the importance of integrating military strength with economic and social development in border and coastal areas. He also stressed the need for technological advancements in defence. This follows recent high-level military changes and rising tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea. The 2024 defence budget has been increased by 7.2%.
