A MAN has left many confused after revealing that he got someone pregnant at the same time as another man, meaning that his twins have different biological fathers.
Taking to TikTok, Eric Vaugh-Trainor (@mrvaughntrainor) posted a video of his adorable twin girls, Harlow and Monroe playing with their sweet dog in the living room.
He said: “When you realise that two years ago today two guys got the same woman pregnant at the same time, and now you’re a dad of twins.”
The post left people scratching their heads, and within a few hours, had racked up a whopping 2.8 million views.
TikTok users raced to the video’s comments section, to share their confusion at Eric’s comment.
One person said: “I’m extremely confused!”
A second person said: “Well… someone explain because I’m lost.”
A third person said: “Sir….. I beg your finest pardon?”
A fourth person added: “This sounds like a soap opera.
“It needs the plot twist that neither are yours.”
In a second video, Eric then cleared things up, with an explanation.
He said: “Story time of how my husband and I got the same woman pregnant at the same time, while her husband was in the room watching.”
Eric explained that he and his husband had been unsuccessful in adopting a child, so had decided to choose surrogacy instead.
They found an egg donor, and when she did her retrieval, half of her eggs went to Eric, and half went to his husband.
The eggs were then fertilised, genetically tested and then frozen, while the couple waited to find a surrogate.
When they found a surrogate, Eric and his husband were in the room, when the embryos were transferred into her womb and she became pregnant.
What is surrogacy?
Surrogacy is the name given for a type of pregnancy where a woman carries and gives birth to another person’s baby.
The surrogate mother is then expected to give up the baby at birth, so it can be raised by the couple who originally wanted the baby.
Surrogacy is often an option for those unable to have children themselves, or for same sex couples.
According to surrogacy charity Childlessness Overcome Through Surrogacy (COTS), there are two different types of surrogacy.
- Traditional surrogacy: When the surrogate uses her own egg fertilised with the intended father’s sperm.
- Gestational surrogacy: The surrogate carries the intended parent’s genetic child conceived through IVF, for which specialist doctors are needed.
How are surrogate babies conceived?
In traditional surrogacy procedures, the egg is artificially inseminated using a syringe.
Gestational surrogacy is carried out through IVF.
During this in vitro fertilisation process, the egg is removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory.
The embryo is then planted in the surrogate’s womb to grow and develop.
This procedure must be carried out by specialist doctors and the biological mother is required to still have working ovaries.
The embryos then grew into twins, with one of them being genetically Eric’s and the other being genetically his husbands.
This means that biologically, the two twins are half siblings.
Eric said: “Technically, there were three different people’s DNA inside her at the same time.
“Her husband had like the best sense of humour in the world, given that his wife was carrying two babies by two different men.”
