Team India managed to pull out another rabbit out of the hat, defeating Sri Lanka via Super Over after the third and final T20I match at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy on Tuesday ended in a tie. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav and batter Rinku Singh were the stars of the show with the ball, picking up two wickets each in the 19th and 20th over snatching a certain win away from the home side.

Batter Suryakumar Yadav, who was leading India in a T20I series full time for the first time after the retirement of Rohit Sharma, led the side to a series whitewash in the Emerald Isles. ‘Sky’ took the responsibility of bowling the crucial final over upon himself and dismissed Kamindu Mendis and Maheesh Theekshana off the second and third delivery of the final over to send the Lankan chase on a spin.

Debutant Chamindu Wickremasinghe managed to eke out a couple of doubles off the last two deliveries to ensure the match ended in a tie. But Suryakumar Yadav ended the Super Over with one blow to the boundary after India restricted the Lankans to just 2 runs.

India captain was adjudged the ‘Player of the Series’ after the three-match T20I series and it was his 5th such award. He is only behind former India captain Virat Kohli who has won six ‘Player of the Series’ awards.

“Like I said before the series, I don’t want to be the captain, I want to be the leader,” Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

The Mumbai Indians batter couldn’t stop praising his teammates, who showed a lot of heart in defending a modest 137. “The amount of skill they have, self-confidence, it makes my job easy. The positivity, the care for each other is unbelievable. After the last game, I told few boys will be rested and they were ready to sit out. They have made my job easy. I have little pressure when I bat,” he said.

India will now play a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka beginning in Colombo on Friday where the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer will be returning to the side.
