Sri Lanka Achieves Unfortunate Milestone with Record Number of T20I Defeats
With their loss against India in the third and final game of the series at Pallekele, Sri Lanka unintentionally established a record for the most defeats in T20I history.
Including Super Overs losses, this defeat put Sri Lanka ahead of Bangradesh, who has 104 losses, with 105 defeats in the shortest format of cricket.
Next closely with 101 and 99 losses, respectively, are West Indies and Zimbabwe.
Sri Lanka decided to bowl first, captained by Charith Asalanke. After suffering early setbacks, India rallied well, scoring 137/9 in 20 overs with the help of all batsmen. With three fours and 39 runs off of 37 balls, Shubman Gill topped the scoring. With runs scored of 26 and 25, respectively, Riyan Parag and Washington Sundar were crucial in the final overs.
During his four overs, Mahesh Theekshana took three wickets for 28 runs, leading the Sri Lankan attack.
By grabbing two wickets for 29 runs, Wanindu Hasaranga also made a contribution.
Sri Lanka substantially depended on their top four players during the run chase. Between them, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera combined for 43 runs from 41 balls, including three fours, and 46 runs from 34 balls struck. With 26 runs from 27 balls and five fours, Pathum Nissanka contributed a little bit. The game went into a Super Over as Sri Lanka, despite their best efforts, could only equal India’s score with 137/8.
With two wickets apiece, Rinku Singh and Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav were crucial to the outcome of the game. The Super Over was declared after Yadav stopped six runs in the last over. During the match, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar each took two wickets.
Sri Lanka’s batting was poor in the Super Over, scoring just 2/2.
With his first ball of the chase, Suryakumar Yadav sealed the victory by smashing a sweep into short fine leg for a four.
Because of his all-around efforts, Washington Sundar was chosen the Player of the Match. Player of the Series went to Suryakumar Yadav because of his continuous play across the whole season.
