Man sentenced to life in prison for 2022 Portland murder
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday for a 2022 murder in Southeast Portland's Lents Neighborhood.
Shaka Imani Chambers, 48, was found guilty by a 12-person jury of murdering 27-year-old Juan Carlos Artiles, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office said.
The original incident happened on Sept. 4, 2022, when Portland police officers responded at about 5:42 a.m. to reports of a shooting near Southeast 90th Avenue and Southeast Woodstock Boulevard. Inside a residence, a man later identified as Artiles was found dead. The medical examiner later confirmed he died of a gunshot wound.
Chambers was arrested on Sept. 12, 2022, and has remained in custody ever since.
Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Michael Greenlick sentenced Chambers to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after 25 years, for one count of second-degree murder with a firearm. Chambers was also sentenced to 36 months consecutive for one count of first-degree burglary with a firearm. The charge of unlawful use of a weapon was merged with the murder charge sentence.
