Oregon Zoo proposes Packy-inspired license plate for species conservation

0

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The Oregon Zoo is introducing a new way to "stand out from the herd."

On Tuesday, the Oregon Zoo revealed a new Oregon license plate design featuring an Asian elephant -- representing conservation work happening at the zoo and around the world -- with pink roses in homage to the Rose City.

Sales from the license plates will help protect endangered and life threatened species in Oregon and across the globe.

The zoo noted the plate's artwork is similar to a 1990 public mural on the Old Skidmore Foundation Building in Portland by artist Jeremy Nichols.

The mural featured Packy -- a beloved Asian elephant, who in 1962, became the first elephant to be born in the Western Hemisphere in 44 years. He was also one of 22 Asian elephants born at the Oregon Zoo.

In order for the plates to go into production, the Oregon Zoo Foundation needs to sell at least 3,000 vouchers.

In addition to regular title, registration, and plate fees, the Oregon Zoo plate has a $40 surcharge when first ordered and at each registration renewal.
