SAN MATEO — An 83-year-old man was killed after his car went over a concrete barrier at the edge of a freeway ramp, landing on its side in a dirt lot owned by Caltrans in San Mateo, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident occurred late Sunday or early Monday, officers said, but they could not specify the exact time.

The San Francisco resident was driving on the transition road between eastbound Highway 92 and northbound Highway 101 at an unknown speed when the car went off the west side of the  road. The driver was partially ejected from the vehicle as it came to rest on its left side, authorities said.

The incident was called in Monday morning by PG&E employees, who were conducting maintenance on electrical boxes when they found the deceased man. CHP officers were dispatched to the scene just after 9 a.m.

The driver was pronounced dead at 9:11 a.m. The San Mateo County Coroner determined that the man had died in the late night or early Monday, police said.

The man’s identity will be released once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.

The investigation is ongoing, officials said. They do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
