THE FATE of a popular BBC drama has been revealed after making a sensational return to screens three years ago.
Waterloo Road was rebooted by the corporation in September 2021 after six years off the airwaves.
The likes of Angela Griffin and Adam Thomas returned to the show to reprise their roles of Kim Campbell and Donte Charles respectively.
Jamie Glover and Lauren Drummond also made huge comebacks to the show, as Andrew Treneman and Mika Grainger.
The BBC previously announced a double commission for two series last year after a huge revamp.
According to TVZone, the show has been renewed for another two series on top of that.
As such, four new instalments of the popular school programme are on the way, as the publicly funded broadcaster will take the drama to series 17.
According to the outlet, the news was initially revealed by an announcement for a Directors Programme which is a joint career development scheme with Warner Bros.
However, mention of a potential 17th series of the show has since been removed from the page.
Meanwhile, the 14th series of the show will air later this year as 8 Out Of 10 Cats star Jason Manford joins the cast.
He will play the role of Steve Savage who becomes headteacher of the school, which will have wide ranging impacts on both pupils and staff.
Fans will be left questioning the future of Kim Campbell (Griffin) who is the current headteacher.
He will join the likes of former Coronation Street actress Kym Marsh and Neil Fitzmaurice as staff at the infamous school.
There has previously been a precedent to replace the head teacher mid-series.
In series three, Jack Rimmer (Jason Merrells) was replaced by Rachel Mason (Eva Pope) after only seven episodes.
Waterloo Road returns to BBC One in autumn 2024 and previous episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
