CSK’s Single Requirement for Dhoni to Stay: BCCI to Make the Final Call
An announcement on MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings has not been made in the months since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season ended. This season, Dhoni resigned from his position as team captain before play began, giving Ruturaj Gaikwad the opportunity to take charge of the group. Despite the fact that CSK was eliminated from the playoffs, Ruturaj’s leadership offered many advantages. Is Dhoni’s career as a player over, though? Retention decisions made by the BCCI and IPL management will determine whether or not the Thalas stay in the league, according to sources.
The number of players the BCCI will let the franchises keep is unclear because a massive auction is slated to take place prior to the IPL 2025 season. As to a report published in Cricbuzz, Dhoni’s playing career in the league is contingent upon the BCCI permitting each team to retain a minimum of 5–6 players.
Even though the order of retention could be tricky, the Super Kings’ most likely players to be kept are Shivam Dube, Matheesha Pathirana, Ravindra Jadeja, and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
According to earlier reports, franchise owners have been summoned by the IPL executives to a meeting on July 31 where the retention issue will be reviewed.
The franchise owners were reportedly texted by IPL CEO Hemang Amin to schedule a meeting; however, the location and time of the meeting were not yet confirmed.
“Amin is understood to have also indicated that the meeting would occur in the late afternoon or evening on July 31. It is believed that all the owners have confirmed their availability for the meeting,” a report said.
“While the exact venue has not been confirmed, the congregation is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre, the BCCI headquarters, located within the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai,” it added.
It was also mentioned in the article that the BCCI might permit the retention of five or six players.
