'Unprecedented': Ex-Harris staffer explains why Vance is 'in the worst place to be'

Jamal Simmons — former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris — expressed on Monday that his former boss's rival, 2024 GOP vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance (R-OH) is struggling to prove he was the right choice.

"Are you surprised that — it's been a week now that it's been clear she was going to be the [2024 Democratic presidential] candidate — that [Republicans] haven't landed on a single line of attack against her?" Collins asked Simmons, referring to Trump and Vance's failure to successfully criticize Harris on her politics and policies.

"Yeah, I am very surprised they didn't have this gamed out beforehand," Simmons replied, "but they really must have been thinking, 'There's no way the Democrats are going to do this. This is unprecedented.'"

He continued, "I gotta believe, as a communications person, that one thing that Trump has to hate is now you've got — not just Vance versus Harris, or Vance versus whoever the unnamed nominee is going to be for [Harris'] VP — it's Vance versus Vance."

"It's always the worst place to be in the communication scenario, because you're just running Vance's quotes in the past against him now, and no presidential candidate I have ever met in my life — and I've met a few of them — wants to spend time talking about the problems of their vice president or the problems of their staff," Simmons added.

The Democratic analyst emphasized, "That is not a good place to be."
